Vance Devane
Vance Devane was born in Port Jefferson, New York. He was the eldest of three children. He grew up in Shoreham, a town on Long Island's north shore. His family frequently vacationed on Hilton Head Island where they owned a small condo.

Upon graduating high school, Vance joined the United States Marines. He completed basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, and served two tours in Iraq. After his enlistment, Vance moved to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), eventually becoming a special agent.
​
Vance served with NCIS until 2019 when he was forced to resign for mistreating a suspect. He then went to work as a private investigator, joining his brother and his wife on Hilton Head Island. He currently works for his sister-in-law's financial planning firm, Devane & Associates Asset Management. Vance's role is handling "sensitive matters" for the firm's wealthy clients while keeping them quiet.

Vance is known for his flashy attire, consisting of bright, pastel shirts usually paired with jeans and a jacket. At the start of the series, Vance drives a bright purple Lamborghini Murcielago. He is also seen driving a red Porche 944 in flashbacks.

Vance's main love interest is Hannah Montague. He met her whilst trying to retrieve inappropriate letters sent to her by a client. But Vance ended up falling in love with her.
​
Vance carries a Beretta .22 semiautmatic pistol. He is also a fourth-degree black belt in Taekwondo.

In spite of his flashy appearance and somewhat hedonistic lifestyle, Vance is a capable detective, often noticing small details the police miss.
